NPC: Weekly Roundup No. 3

Asop van Galgen, prosecutor at the Reichshandelsbureau, is very much the image of the new generation of Wezellian technocrats, carrying his authority with pride and enjoying the trappings of his status.

He achieved his Awakening while enrolled in the chantry-school in the Rederhafen's Academic Quarter and entered public service immediately following his dissertation.

As a student of the Three Pillars of Power, Fate, Prime, and Mind, and with a magister's degree in Juris Arcanum his career naturally lies within the Aktorate. His first office lies within the Reichshandelsbureau, the body charged with regulating international trade.

NPC: Weekly Roundup No. 2

Boudewijn Houdemakers, first mate of De Goudende Ezel, comes from a long line of sailors. He himself started as a cabin boy at age nine and by the time he was 19 he was the third mate on a Wezellian skytrader. The calm, quiet, always impeccably dressed man could probably have made quite a career for himself, but he seems to carry some dark sorrow in his soul.

NPC: Weekly roundup

Ylvana is the queen of Terema, the northernmost realm of the Enlightened Alliance.

She is credited for preparing her people for the arrival of the OUT colony, as well as a number of reforms. In her reign Terema has progressed from a retrospective and isolationist society to a progressive nation with close ties to the southern realms. She has also managed to maintain her people's culture and integrity in the face of strong influence from both Outsiders and foreigners.

Her sobriquet Sáitidronnet, literally meaning 'spear queen' was given her by her people. It reflects her strength, her keen and piercing mind, and is a reference to the Enæïdùn spear she carries.

NPC: Johannes Drowan, Nether-warden of Rederhafen

Johannes was born by the side of a narrow road just north of the Redlands, sometime during the winter of '29. His mother, a young whore travelling with her pimp, died while giving birth. The child, his small horns clearly marking him as an Umbrian, was sold to a merchant in Fork. What motive the merchant had may never be known, but the child was well cared for until his custodian was killed over a barrel of wine five years later.

NPC: The Black Cantor

Years ago,  back when the Redlands were still called the Duchy of Diem, the Monastic Order St. Euridicius owned several large wineries in the region, all run from the Abbey of Wolfgarten. The order's vows of poverty had long since become an empty formality, and the Abbey's luxury was said to rival that of the Ducal Palace in Zalburg.

Brother Aramath of Liesse was the third son of a Narbonnian grain merchant, and at an early age he was brought to the monks of St. Euridicius for his education and future career. He never showed any great affinity for numbers or theology, and one may even say he was a more than a little lazy. Still, his father's donations and his singing voice made sure he got to say his vows when he came of age.

Once he became a brother of the cloth, he was sent to the Abbey of Wolfgarten where he served in the obscurity of utter mediocrity for almost ten years. As with many of his brothers, the monastic life led to a steadily increasing gut, and a deteriorating health. In the summer of 1022 YE his heart all but gave in to the weight of his corpus, and he fell down a flight of stairs. The fall broke his left ankle, and he was taken to the infirmary.

At the same time, outside the walls of the monastery, the Red Death washed over the land, turning layman, noble and clergy alike into mindless, walking dead, hungry for the flesh of the living. A monk returning from a tour of a nearby wine-yard was attacked by one of the afflicted and bit in the arm. Fright kept him from informing his betters, and within days he suffered the Red Death. With the curse now loose inside the walls, some of the monks fled, others turned to prayer -- none survived.

As madness gripped the Abbey, the Infirmarian locked the infirmary doors from the outside, hoping to save some of the sick, injured or elderly monks lying inside. In the summer heat, and without access to food or water, death came quick or slow to those poor souls, but it came to all. Brother Aramath's broken leg turned gangrenous, and without aid from the physicians, his body and mind was racked by a savage fever. For days he hung on, while his brothers died around him in the hot room, smelling of piss, desperation, vomit and death. At last his body could not take it any more, and he could feel the last fibres of his life-thread snapping.

It was in that very moment, as the cold darkness closed in around him, that the thing from the crypt appeared before him. It offered him life, and he took it without a second thought.

When Aramath broke through the doors and emerged into the world again, he found it to no less hellish than the nightmare he left behind him in the infirmary. Partially devoured corpses lay in blood-smeared hallways, corpses shambled aimlessly around in the courtyard, and something cold and dead had merged with his soul.

In the decades following his brush with death, Aramath has become known in the Redlands as the Black Cantor. He spends most of his days walking the roads, paths and trails running through the once prosperous, now mostly deserted and infested with evil, region. Constantly singing psalms as he patrols his parish, he brings death to those who deserve it, be they living, undead, or supernatural. He even sometimes aid those he deems worthy of life. He was always large, but the black-clad, grey-bearded giant he is today bears little resemblance to the wobbling mountain that fell down those stairs so long ago. The radical paradigmatic change of his life also revealed his faith to him, and he will offer spiritual guidance where he deems it appropriate, which is to say almost everywhere. When stronger medicine is required, he uses a heavy oaken staff on which he has mounted the bronze tutelary from the Abbey's funeral shrine.

Fragments of Truth and Fiction: Lethal Ladies

Elyn von Sturm, one of the best Panzerzeppelin-commanders of the OUT, is a first generation Argonian. It is said that she is more at home in the air than on the ground. She often volunteers her dirigible, the Himmelwulf, for long-range scouting missions. She is known to be particularly interested in arcane phenomena, and lately it has been commented that perhaps her methods are a little too dynamic for the Thulist establishment.

The Painted Man

The Dark Continent has many dark legends, and though those of the Witch-king of Gerem Faït are not amongst the more widely known, they have few rivals in terms of fear, horror, and undying evil.

In the days when the Erian civilizations were still young, there lived a mighty wizard in a now forgotten kingdom. His hunger for power led him to delve deeper and deeper into mysteries man was never meant to know, and as his quest lead him further down his dark path, he also became obsessed with immortality. Through nigromantic rituals and deals with old and best forgotten entities, he managed to cheat Dìs of his due.

Pax Corax

The Duchy of Diemed used to be a prosperous area, rich on overland trade between Western Eria and the Skythian Empire. The many villages and farms that lay liberally strewn throughout the fertile, shallow river-valleys were by many seen as the rural ideal, and the cities and towns were wealthy and peaceful. The mines in the southern mountains, though not rich enough to attract the envy of the greater princes, still provided a healthy financial bedrock for the House of Diem. The silversmiths of Zalburg and Woll-am-Möwe were also widely renowned for the quality, if not beauty, of their work. Likewise, the University of Zalburg was acknowledged for it's achievements in the fields of natural philosophy and the liberal arts, and it had a Chair in the Cabal of Pure Thought for more than three hundred years.

Then, during the summer of YE 1022, the Red Death swept away all semblance of civilization, and tore asunder the Hegemony of Man over these lands. Mekelrad, the Lord of the Red Death, the terrible demon that brought the plague to Eria, was lured to Zalburg by the Thulist plague-herders. Here the Outsiders trapped the demon inside a blasphemous machine, using it's struggles to fuel a heinous experiment designed to burn a hole in Creation. While the demon was slain, and the Thulists driven out, the damage wrought on reality was so great that now a different law rules the region.

The deluge-like onslaught of the zombie plague was halted when Mekelrad was destroyed, but within what has become known as the Redlands, the restless dead still prowl hungrily. The Northern Alliance have built fortifications around the borders, and cavalry and cabals of magicians patrol them. Some of villages and towns that were deserted have been reclaimed, but in these walled communities, the living live in fear of the dead. Marauding packs of zombies roam across the once peaceful countryside, and many who have tried to return to their homes have vanished.

There are also other tales beginning to be told about the Redlands. Trolls, hobgoblins and other creatures from the dark depths of myth are said to have returned to the mortal world. The ravens are everywhere, and rumour has it that a great and ancient raven-king holds court somewhere in the deserted region. Where mortal nobles and rational thought once ruled, wizards, dark beasts, ghosts, zombies, and entities from the other side now do as they please. The Hegemony of Man does not extend to these lands.

Rumours:
  1. The Raven King has a mighty magician as his servant.
  2. Gypsies are seen travelling into the Redlands.
  3. There are vast treasures hidden in the ruins inside the Redlands.
  4. The zombies are controlled by a nigromancer.
  5. If a corpse is lain outside for a hour after dawn, it's eyes will be eaten by ravens, and it's soul will not haunt the living.
  6. A great troll has been seen in the hills.
  7. A child born with a red birth-mark has been tainted by evil.
  8. A terrible darkness lies buried in the ruins of Zalburg.

NPC: Rupertus Ludenius

This is an edited re-post from 4 December 2010. The conspiering events from yesterday have decided to keep conspiering, hence the chapter's further delay. This post has been edited to reflect the NPC's adventures since becoming part of the Pius Cabal; a paragraph has been added at the bottom of the bio, as have some new links, and a new picture, further, his stats have been adjusted.

Adeptus Rupertus Themian Ludenius bani Flambeu began his career when he was chosen for apprenticeship at age fourteen. Born a Citizen, the first son of a northern farmer and his wife, he was brought before a Master at the annual Folkemoot, and there found worthy of being taken into the Order. Normally only children under the age of twelve, or those who have allready Awakened, are chosen at the Folkemoot, but the Master saw something in the sullen boy. And so Rupertus was enrolled in House Flambeu, one of the two recognized Houses of the Order.

While he proved to be hard working and focused, Rupertus's Awakening came late, and only at age thirty four did he finally get his Apprentice-robes. His teachers predicted a dull career for the gloomy young man, as most Hermetics his age now wore the robes of a Student of the Arts. They would undoubtedly have been proven right, had it not been for the patronage of Master Vermis Ludenius, of House Bonisagus. At this time, Vermis had only recently delivered his Masterpiece, and he chose the dark-eyed northerner as his first Apprentice. While it is not uncommon for a Master to take on an Apprentice from a different House than his own, this still caused some stir at the time. Some claim that the true reason for this was that Master Ludenius was not nearly a good enough magus to get the pick of the litter.

Master Vermis Ludenius was at this time assigned to the Mercantile Tribunal, and after that to the Chamber of Treasury, and over the course of the following twenty years, Rupertus studied hard under several of the Order's best teachers. It is said that one of his teachers once told Vermis that teaching the Arts to Rupertus was like explaining Etherial physics to a Presbyterian. Nevertheless, thanks to his own doggedness, and, some say, his Master's deep pockets, Rupertus finally won his Adeptus-robes in YE 1019.

The first year of his first mandatory two-year Adeptus praxis he served as Adeptus Secundus on the Aegathon under then Adeptus, now Master of the Fleet, Octavian Arbalestus. The second year he served as Adeptus Cataphractor for Master Severus Septimus in the northern borderlands. He received good evaluations after both these tours, and once he was released back to his Master, both his own and his Master's reputation had been vindicated.

By now the Great War had begun, and Master Vermis Ludenius had been appointed Burgmaster of Göteshafen. Rupertus became his Master's secretary and accountant, as well as serving as the Tower's Chair in the Town Council. At age fifty seven, he doesn't look a day older than thirty five. This is typical of the Hermetics, and the secret of their longevity is a well kept secret.

When the good ship Pius visited Göteshafen in late Ovtavium, YE 1022, Master Ludenius struck a bargain with the Pius Cabal. As part of this deal, Rupertus was sent to serve as a liaison between the Order and the cabal. The Hermetic Adeptus quickly found his place, as a vital part of the ship's command staff, working very closely with Commander Spearhawk, the non-Enlightened first-mate of the Pius. The two men has managed to replicate several master-pieces, using the ship, her crew, and often as not vast quantities of Mana. He has also widened his fields of research to include natural philosophy, aerostatics, Enlightened Science, theology, and goethic science.

Nobilitas Adumbrae I

The city of Fork lies where the river Mist meets the Traen. It was amongst the first Diemedan cities to fall to the Red Death. Its population had little warning before the zombies were among them, and few who did not flee survived. In its heyday it was a prosperous centre of trade on the region's rivers. Over the last few months, Fork has been plundered and burned at least twice. As with the rest of the Redlands, the Hegemony of Man has been torn asunder, and here no mortal lord rules the land.

Today it has fallen under the Dominion of the Raven King, mostly due to Schensal, now Count of the Fork -- a crafty Hobgoblin of a certain renown. In local folklore, Schensal is known as a rude and greedy, but ultimately kind-hearted figure, often as not meeting out some sort of justice to the deserving. As far as anyone knows, this entity physically stepped onto Argos in the early Autumn of YE 1022, and he now holds a court involving both spirits, geists and other supernaturals. While he does not directly influence the city's slowly returning mortal society, he makes sure that those who dwell in his fiefdom pay him respect, and that he receives his cut of the profits being made.

Agent Nix

"I don't know where he's from, ma'am. I don't think anyone does, really. He quite the private sort, this one. From what I gather, it's most likely somewhere in the Outer Colonies. A barren, sun-scorched rock, where dust is the number one commodity, like as not. An orphan too, from reading his files."

"He entered the Royal Academy at age twelve, and despite a list of infractions long as my coachman's arm, he quickly impressed his teachers with his natural grasp of all things concerning the Aether. He's a bit of a loner, and seems to have a deeply rooted contempt for authorities. At age fourteen he almost got himself expelled for punching a professor. Only after direct intervention from the Bureau of Unforeseeable Affairs did the Academy relent -- yes, ma'am, direct intervention, it says. No, ma'am, it does not mention a name."

"At age fifteen he built his first Aether-craft, a sun-board. The professors said it was quite ingenious, and that the boy had solved a problem that had confounded the Queen's best engineers for generations. This, however, did not mean that he had relented his earlier wild ways. He broke just about every harbour-regulation, up to and including causing an Aetherjammer to crash into the piers. Needless to say, the gendarmes cared little for the boy genius's bright future, and the Bureau had to step in again. No name this time either, ma'am. The magistrate gave him the choice between hard labour and joining the ranks."

"His service record is as one might suspect: disrespecting a superior officer, neglect, breach of conduct, misappropriation of the Queen's property... Would you like me to continue, ma'am?"

"Very well. He served on a patrol skiff in the Lesser Colonies for a year and a half, then he goes absent without leave for five weeks. He is apprehended in a star-port on Alenna by the provosts, with a girl of course, and shipped back to Corregidor for sentencing. This time he does time -- no, ma'am, the Bureau isn't mentioned, but one can only assume someone saved his neck from the noose. Three years in Duskrock, he got, and it seems it did him good."

"The girl, ma'am? Died on Alenna a year later. Grey fever, ma'am."

"Upon release, he is recruited by the Bureau, and since then he's been all over the place, Baradin, Cordomar, Varanger, Fellport, New Waymar, Hesselrich, the list goes on... You may literally say he's been to Hell and back, ma'am."

"Yes, ma'am, I think he's the perfect man for the job."

On the Painted Man

Abyssal glyph

In the last chapter (post not written at this point), the Pius Cabal visited Siltra, the City of the White Tower. The Tower is, according to legend, one of the seven Watchtowers of Argos. Here they were allowed entry to the library. Here is the essence of what was found about the Painted Man in the scrolls, tomes and tablets. Some of these points are hints, and more information can be found elsewhere on this blog.

  • He his a Nefandic archmage, and a Master of Ars Abyssal, the Forbidden Arcanum believed to grant the Willworker immunity to Paradox.
  • The tattooed body is but a vessel, and the soul is probably at least 1,500 years old.
  • He has had many incarnations.
  • He once wielded the sword Deicide.
  • The tattoos are actually Abyssal glyphs. These glyphs form powerful spells, among these one that keeps the corpus from being consumed by the corrupted soul. Others are powerful wards.
  • It is believed that he was once the Witch-king of Gerem Faït.

Magnus Emil

Master of the Arcana of Prime, Duke of Westerfold, Lord General of the Enlightened Army, Protector of the Truth, Consul of the Northern Realms, Marshall of Livonia, Baron of Höfenstahl, Viscount of Drang, Ritter af Borg and Helm's Hold. Thus runs the list of titles held by Magnus Emil. While of noble birth, his inheritance was no more than the old, though lowly title of Ritter af Borg, and a couple of estates in north-western Livonia.

Born in YE 995, as a boy Magnus Emil proved to be an exceedingly bright, although hot-headed child. He took to reading as a Wezellian to counting coins, and he also quickly astonished his father with his prowess in the martial disciplines. Magnus's father, Gustaf Emil, Ritter af Borg, believed that the Fates had a plan for his son, and on Magnus's seventh birthday, he took the boy to a soothsayer. The old crone foretold that Magnus would bring the Chained God back to Argos, and that he would grow to be feared by his enemies. To his father this was all he needed to know, and thereafter no expense was spared to make Magnus ready for his destiny.

The men of the Borg family have been members of the Knights of Angermar since time immemorial, and Gustaf Emil was no exception. He now called upon all the resources his family and the ancient fraternity could muster, for at last their goal of awakening Bolgen was within reach. The best teachers were hired, and and as soon as Magnus came of age, in YE 1015, a commission in a Livonian mercenary company was purchased for him. And so his military career was begun fighting in the Corillian War. His Awakening came shortly after his arrival in Corillia, and after having fought for six months, he needed to seek new horizons.

The following year he spent travelling the world, visiting Southern Eria, the Western Isles, and the Hannuman Caliphate. He arrived in the Caliphate as the War of Fate erupted, and he quickly lent his sword to the cause of Aziz. For the duration of the war, Magnus fought with the Mujahed against the Army of Light, and in YE 1021 he commanded an artillery unit at the Battle of the White Tower. It was in this battle that Grishnak, the fallen Daeva, was slain by Morfeus, the Prince of Nightmares, and when the Daeva fell, the surge of power caused mass Awakenings. Magnus, allready Awakened, came away with a new fire in his soul.

When he returned to Livonia, he found that his father had passed away and that he was now the Ritter af Borg. He set to leading his estates with an energy and a focus that soon made him a leading figure in the politics of the realm, as well as within the Knights of Angermar.

Shortly after his return, he discovered a rich Tass-vein in the old mines of Helm's Hold, and his bid for power was funded with the profits from these mines. In his journeys he had also come across an artifact of great power, the Coeur de Dracon, and its power was harnessed to open new and deeper shafts. During this work he found a forgotten passage to Hardhagrav, the tomb of the Chained God. With the ultimate goal of the Knights of Angermar now within reach, they rallied behind Magnus Emil, and the work to finally free their god was begun. This work was interrupted in the first days of YE 1022, when the Pius Cabal stole the Coeur de Dracon, as well as a large amount of Tass.

Still, despite this setback, the Ritter af Borg continued to prove himself to be a dangerous and ruthless politician, and more than one opponent passed away under mysterious circumstances. In Eria the Great War had by now become a reality, and in Livonia Magnus strengthened his power-base. When the Arcane Congress was convened in Wezell, he attended as the Grand Master of the Knights of Angermar, as well as the ambassador of the Kingdom of Livonia.

Over the course of the Congress, Magnus Emil came to be recognised as the leader of the Party of Enlightenment, a coalition of cabals and orders within the Congress. Further, when the Enlightened Alliance, a.k.a. the Northern Alliance, declared war on the Enlightened Skythian Empire and the temple of Man Supreme, Magnus Emil was named the lord General of the Enlightened Army. This army, together with the Host of Man, has been tasked with conducting the war on behalf of the Congress and the Alliance.

Since the War of Enlightenment began in Sextum, YE 1022, the Lord General has led his forces deep into the Empire, and he is now gaining a reputation as the greatest war hero of this age.

Casefile: HELLGHAST

CONFIDENTIAL
(restricted)

The Corps of Hellghasts is the elite of the Ordo Ultima Thule. Following the defeat of general Helmand Döner's forces on the world of Varanger the OUT went into hiding, and it is believed that they today control one fringeworld, as well as at least two larger constructs.

According to intelligence, the Hellghasts are picked at age five, and they go through at least fifteen years of gruelling training before they are accepted into the Corps. Reports indicate that they go through several graduations where they are pitted against one another in deadly combat, the victor being allowed to continue his training.

The final stage of the initiation is said to involve the cadette being inserted on a Netherworld alone, unarmed except for a knife. Here he is expected to track and kill a wolf-demon and capture it's spirit. If he survives, he will then have the demon-spirit bound to his soul.

The greatest caution is reccomended when dealing with Hellghasts, for they are utterly corrupt and extremely dangerous. They are all equipped with high technological weapons and equipment, they are highly trained, and they are fanatically loyal to the OUT.

Luckily, as far as we have been able to ascertain, the Corps of Hellghasts count no more than two and a half thousand, and as far as we know, they are deployed in batallions of five hundred.

CONCLUSION
When confronted, exercise great caution and proceed with due dilligence. If possible, kill on sight, failing that, observe and report. Do not approach!

Analea Castillaverde

"You have no place in this world, deepspawn, nor will you ever leave it alive!"

Doña Analea is the widow of Faleandros Castillaverde, Knight Commander of the Knights of St. Invictus. Her father was a merchant in Victoria in the Old Colonies, and the family fled to Cora when the Dark Horde conquered the Colonies. She met Fale when he served in the Order's garrison there, almost fifteen years ago. The raven-haired young girl and the knight fell deeply in love, but the romance seemed impossible, for as a Knight of the Sword, Faleandros had sworn a vow of chastity.

What changed their lives, and bound them by a bond even stronger than marriage, was the intervention of St. Invictus. In 1008 YE, the Grand Master was visited by an apparition of the saint himself, telling him in no uncertain terms that the marriage was a Right and Just thing, and that the laws of men should be set aside for the good of man. And so it was that Faleandros and Analea were wed by the High Prelate of the Order on Invictusmass later that very year.

It may well have been the saint's intention all along, or it may have been the internal tension in the Order caused by the marriage of a knight that caused it, but within a year Faleandros received his promotion and was posted as the Knights' ambassador to the Waymar Islands.

The years in Freeport were the happiest in Ana's life. She gave birth to three healthy children, and together with Fale she built a beautiful home. The couple spent time hunting, riding, and fencing. The birth of their first child, a girl named Ascencion, brought a great change to her life. During labour, Ana Awakened to True Magic. Faleandros, being of a long line of enlightened magicians within the Order now devoted all his time to raising his growing family and educating his wife in the Arcane arts.

When the Ordo Ultima Thule started to tighten their grip on the Islands, Faleandros opposed them both openly and with all his might. He also strongly urged his wife to take the children back to Cora, but before this could happen, events took a turn for the worse. Cora fell, and the few reports that made it across the Outer Sea from Eria bore news of pyres and dark tribunals. Then the ships stopped returning all together.

By then the situation went from bad to truly dire. The Thulists no longer ruled from the shadows, but came out in the open. Fomori and Hellghasts rounded up all who dared speak against the new order, and no one saw them again. The night they came for Falendros, Ana and the children had gone to Port Edras to try and arrange for passage off the island for the family.

When word reached her of her husband's capture, she went through yet another great change. Deep in her soul a great fire erupted, and without hesitation she returned to Freeport to save her beloved Faleandros. She never found him, but she killed several fomori and three Hellghasts at the Donjon, and she recovered the Castillaverde artifacts before they were sent away.

Since then she has become known as Lady Furia, The Widow, and many similar noms de guerre among the population. She has tirelessly conducted a one-woman crusade against the Outsiders and all who affiliate themselves with them, for she believes that her children will never grow up unless the evil is driven off. Due to her zeal, she has become the de facto leader of the resistance on the island of Cordomar. She still searches for trace of her husband.
